Across all schools, Facebook is the most popular platform (80%), followed by Twitter (68%). The third most popular is surprisingly LinkedIn, with 24% of the schools surveyed making use of the professional networking site. Other platforms are less popular with only 16% on Google+, 12% on Pinterest and 8% on Instagram.
Facebook use varies widely though - 100% of Independent schools and 90% of Free Schools and Academies use the platform, compared to only 20% of those in Local Authority control. By contrast, Twitter is used by 80% of all state schools (LA/Free Schools/Academies) but only 56% of Independent schools.
Marketing Advice for Schools comments 'There's no real surprise that so many schools are using social media. There does seem to be a major split though - with those schools who need to focus on differentiating themselves using Facebook, while those who may prioritise creating links with an existing community choosing Twitter.'
